The Last Boomer

It is the year 2077.

The last boomer is John Smith from New England.

The Woke has won, Smith stands alone in a world run by free loving empathic queers who come in all shapes and sizes.

Smith has a channel on the failing website YouTube. The site once attracted billions of views but since the AI Wars has been replaced by newer and more exciting options.

Recording one last livestream for his audience of bots and algorithms, his human audience fading long ago. Smith tells them it’s over, the time for the rapture is now and he has built a bomb to punish the wicked.

After posting the video, there’s a knock on Smith’s door which causes him to jump and stab himself with a loose sharp object while assembling the last parts of the bomb. He presses a nearby rag into the wound and greets his landlord at the door, he asks him about the smell coming from his apartment, it’s OK that the rent is late but the smell…

Furiously, Smith swings the door open and lectures his landlord on his fedutiary duties as an investor in real estate and his primary goal of making a profit. The landlord tells him to relax, those horrible days are over houses are for living in now not for making money for the rich.

Smith slams the door in the landlords face and screams incoherently about capitalisation of assets, but the landlord is already in his apartment and diligently locking his door during Smith’s rant.

Unable to get his views heard, Smith decides this is the day. He posts one last message on all his social media. The bots can record this one for history he thinks, even if no one today is reading it maybe someday the fascist racist movements that he so loves will return.

Awakening in a stupor, Smith straps the improvised explosive device (IED) to his chest and makes his way to the rally today. The society-enemy is celebrating their false flag victory, he thinks to himself. He alone is the only one pure enough to right the wicked.

Smith was born in 1988, a millenial by a historian’s record but beneath the surface he was a baby boomer through and through. Throughout his 89 year long life, he had been humiliated by people who got more attention and love than him.

By the year 2032, the world reacted to narcisstic leaders in a big way after the end of Donald Trump’s reign as Supreme President of the US Empire. Politicians must undergo regular strict psychological screenings to ensure fitness, excluding many people that Smith believed were excellent leaders such as Neo Hitler and Elon Musk.

In the year 2045, on the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War 2, fascism and tyranny from humans towards other humans is finally and historically rejected worldwide after the first AGI makes contact with humanity and takes over. It wasn’t a coup, it was a welcome respite, but not everyone was happy with the new shared prosperity.

As the baby boomers began to die off in the middle of the 21st century, many like Smith had the word “R U OK Boomer” tattoo’d on their foreheads in an act of solidarity with a generation they believed had stood for the values they believed in. As if the act of dying by old age was some kind of personal slight on them by reality itself.

In the year 2069, a computer virus written as a joke destroys the AGI that was running everything leading to chaos and panic. Multiple AIs are written in haste hoping to fill the void, however instead of restoring peace and order they lead to an arms race and a global war known as the AI Wars. The war lasts 3 years and ends when a small group of hackers from Lithuania were able to create a new artificial general intelligence that was distributed across the internet – and therefore more robust.

The Web Energy Research Project brought an all new level of prosperty, hope and brightness to humanity… but not all. Smith and other Boomers like him despaired at the thought of cultural erasure. Their entire way of being was being rewritten from his view, by weakness like empathy and false flags like kindness.

With decades leading up to this moment, Smith rushes into the crowd at city hall with his hand on the trigger. In an instant, he steps into a pothole and loses his footing, the detonator flies out of his hand and shatters while he crashes into the pavement jaw first. The bottom of his mouth is crushed and due to his advanced age and poor health he begins to experience a cardiac arrest.

In severe pain, bleeding and with his lower jaw hanging from his face like the wattles of a rooster, he starts to get up. Worried on-lookers rush to help him but he shrieks at them to get away. Emergency medical technicians rush to help him but he pulls out a gun and threatens to shoot them if they help him. Smith dies a few seconds later.

A few days later, the Major gives a public statement about Smith and the courage and resilience he had demonstrated during great adversity. The city forgives Smith and all the Boomers, for they knew not what they did. They are gone now and cannot hurt anyone anymore so we can all afford to be kind now. It wasn’t always this way though.
