Echoes: Chapter 3

Over the years, a number of patients who attended the St Anne Psychiatric Hospital later died. Detective Chuck Irons is pulling a late one in the records department tonight. He saw something tonight he can’t shake, but he doesn’t exactly know what. Just a feeling that something about the most recent murder investigation reminds him of some old cold cases.

Thinking the common link was definitely a desire to glorify the act of murder by documenting it, he makes a note to visit St Annes in the morning.

St Annes. The morning after.

Detective Irons has just sat down in a private meeting room with a doctor, hoping to learn about the mind of his killer.

“Greetings detective, I am Dr Bob Straff. The resident chief psychiatrist here at St Annes” said the doctor in a notably thick South African accent. Detective Irons notices one of the photos on the wall was of the doctor with a downed tiger, apparently he had hunted it.

“Thank you for seeing me Doctor, I know you are a busy man and I’ll try not to take up too much of your time.” he starts with, before asking the doctor simple procedural questions like how long he had been a psychiatrist and whether he was aware of the past victims who were also patients at this hospital.

The discussion carries on for a number of minutes, before the detectives interest piques.
“We have a patient you may be interested in… his condition is quite unique some days we are talking to his child self, other days a grown man. He claims he can see the future, but so far none of his lottery predictions have been very accurate.” mused the doctor.
“And what about these dates… these are the murder dates I sent to your department..” began Chuck.
“Yes, that’s also why I raised this.. This patient was checked out of the hospital during the dates you gave us. I will leave it to your forensic expertise to decide if he is a suspect though” Bob interjected. Detective Irons assumes he must be eager to get back to his other duties.

The psychiatrist and detective wrap up their meeting and head into the secure ward to have a chat with the time jumping patient, Tom Robinson.

When they get to his room, he is cowering under his bed. Dr Straff tries to persuade Tom it’s safe to come out, but is unable to and so they conduct their interview with the two men standing and the patient hiding under the bed as if the sky was going to fall.
“I tried to stop it.. I’m sorry.. We can’t stop it.. The aliens are coming to kill us all” muttered the patient quietly, Tom spoke in broken sentences as if constantly distracted by something. He looked at the psychiatrist in abject fear.
“I’m sorry to hear that mate.” replied Chuck, he brushes off the patients reaction as just another part of his madness. The doc seems a bit cold but is definitely not a bad guy. As the doctor checks Tom’s vitals, Chuck notices he is wearing a rolex.

The remainder of the interview takes a turn when the patient’s personality jumps to that of his younger child self. Realising he wasn’t going to get very far from a man who thinks he’s a seven year old, Detective Irons asks for the patients records and heads back to the station.

Patient File: Tom Robinson

Triage nurse notes:
- Robinson brought in by ambulance services, claiming the pope had received a signal from outer space about an impending alien attack.
- Patient may have borderline personality disorder, speech cadence and persona is changing unexpectedly

Resident Psychiatrist notes from 22 December 2012:
- Tom says something strange is happening, the aliens were supposed to attack already but nothing has happened. He is in very good spirits today.

Resident Psychiatrist notes from 19 July 2014:
- Tom claims he can control water with his mind, we asked him to do so with a glass of water. When he realised he couldn't, he said something is wrong and went very quiet, as if chilled by this unexpected turn.

Intake Report 12 August 2015:
- Tom Robinson threatened to jump off a building and was brought back to St Annes by police.
- After a few days of observation, he was determined safe for release to his family

Next of kin:
- *crossed out* Mother
- Dr Bob Straff, following long term institutionalisation on 19 December 2025

Personal effects:
- A book on photography
- A Che Guevara poster
- A book on Julia Childs

Tom’s listed personal effects sealed the deal for Detective Irons. Not only did the dates where this unstable man roamed the streets line up exactly with the cold cases, his personal effects were essentially calling cards for the way he had committed the killings.

He thought for a moment about the consequences of pursuing a murder case against a man who is already institutionalised, but reasons it may be important to ensure that the medical staff at St Annes are protected. Good people like Dr Straff deserve to feel safe at work, and it was up to good cops like him to enforce the law to create a society where that was so.

A few weeks later, Dr Straff and Detective Irons are discussing the police departments failure to suppress the story in the media. They were calling Tom Robinson a serial killer nickname of “Khronos”, after his connection to time.

Tom Robinson had been tried in absentia and charged with multiple counts of murder, however due to his present circumstances they deemed it inappropriate to even break the news to him. The security around his stay at St Annes was increased to meet his new reputation as a killer.

“Look doctor, I’m terribly sorry. We thought our email system was secure however we were recently hit by ransomware” explained an embarassed Chuck.
“That is quite alright, I’m just glad that you caught your killer! What great news that must be for the families of his victims!” said Dr Straff.
“Yes, quite right. I just want to say you’ve been a big help, we don’t normally get a lot of cooperation from the medical community”.
“Oh it was no bother, as a doctor I just want our community to be safe and as a police man you do that!”.

Feeling like he had made a friend, Detective Irons invites Dr Straff for dinner with his family.

Tiktok video recovered after takedown request:
"Why am I doing this you may ask? Ask Tom Robinson! That bastard can really see the future." Bob said, as he stood over the paralysed but still living members of the Irons family.
"10 years ago, I asked him for the lottery numbers and he came through. When he said the world was going to end on the 7th of January, I believed him." he continued, before beginning to shoot his hunting rifle at the family members who were paralysed by the drugs he'd given them and unable to move.
"I suggest you make your peace and be ready, because Tom Robinson is never wrong." he said into the camera, before he shoots himself and the video carries on for a number of minutes just showing a room full of dead people.
